The Safe and Sound Protocol: Using Sound for Nervous system Regulation

Written by Laura Mickow | June 16 2026

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening-based intervention designed to gently support nervous system regulation. While it may appear simple on the surface, its impact is rooted in how the brain processes safety and connection.

There’s a reason some people feel constantly “on edge”-even in safe environments. For many, the nervous system doesn’t fully register safety. It stays alert, scanning, bracing. When the brain is in protection mode, healing becomes difficult.

In brain health programs such  as ours, regulation is foundational. That’s why SSP plays such an important role. It supports the body’s ability to recognize safety and creates the conditions where growth, connection, and healing can begin.

What Is The Safe and Sound Protocol?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a research-informed listening intervention designed to support nervous system regulation. It was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, neuroscientist and creator of the Polyvagal Theory, as a practical application of decades of research on how the brain and body respond to cues of safety and threat.

At its core, SSP was created to help individuals whose nervous systems remain stuck in patterns of protection- even when they are physically safe. Rather than targeting thoughts or behaviors directly, it focuses on supporting the underlying neural pathways involved in regulation, connection, and resilience.

It’s important to clarify what SSP is not. It is not traditional sound therapy, music therapy, or relaxation audio. While it involves listening to specially processed music, the intention is not entertainment or mood enhancement. The music serves as a delivery system- a structured, clinically designed pathway intended to gently support the nervous system’s ability to detect safety more accurately.

How Does It Work?

SSP is based on the polyvagal theory and it involves creating a stable platform in which the nervous system can take on meaningful growth and engagement. The forcing of change from threat to overwhelm that occurs when the nervous system is dysregulated- makes it difficult to take on new challenges and experiences.

The Safe and Sound Protocol uses music that is specially processed through acoustic filtering. This applied filtering emphasizes the specific frequency range associated with human speech and social cues, the same frequencies that signal to our nervous system that we are safe and in the presence of others who mean us no harm.

This processed music is delivered through headphones and gently exercises the neural pathways that are involved in detecting safety (including the ones connected to the vagus nerve and middle ear muscles). Over a series of listening sessions, this stimulation gradually supports the nervous system in spending more time in a regulated state- which is the state associated with social engagement, calm, and connection.

The music is divided up into five hour-long sections that are to be listened to in order. These listening sessions are delivered alongside the support of a trained and certified provider, which further helps to reinforce the sense of safety that is the aim of the protocol. The types of providers that facilitate this intervention include ones that practice occupational, play, physical, mental health and cognitive therapies.

What Is a Session Like?

The Safe and Sound Protocol sessions can look different due to the type of the provider and because  everyone has individual needs. The first session includes an intake assessment to see where a person is at and then a plan is put in place from there.

Depending on the provider, sessions might include the other services they are providing for the client along with SSP. All the client will do is listen to the filtered music with headphones. The amount of time in a session, the intensity (three levels: Connect, Core and Balance) and frequency is different for every client. It is important that feedback is given to the provider to adjust the plan as needed so that the client has great experiences with the protocol.

The sessions can be done in an office, remotely or independently under the guidance of one's trained provider.

Benefits  of The Safe and Sound Protocol

SSP is very safe, effective and  has helped many people around the world. The overall main benefit of it is nervous system regulation which can have the following positive effects :

  • Decreased depression and anxiety

  • Increased ability to process emotions
  • Increased ability to deal with what could be stressful situations
  • Increased level of comfort in social situations
  • Decreased difficulty with sensory processing
  • Increased ability to heal from trauma

The Safe and Sound Protocol is especially helpful for the following conditions:

  • Depression and anxiety disorders

  • Behavioral challenges
  • Social and emotional challenges
  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • Sensory processing disorder
  • Trauma

SSP at EA

The Safe and Sound Protocol is just one of the innovative therapies we offer in our Functional Brain Health Program. Integrating this into our program allows us to address nervous system dysregulation in a way that complements the other therapies and strategies we provide.

For some of our clients- persistent tension, sensory overload, emotional dysregulation, or hypervigilance can limit progress in daily functioning even when traditional therapies are in place. By incorporating SSP, our staff can help them experience a shift in their internal state of safety and calm, which creates a better starting point for improving focus, emotional balance, social engagement, and overall brain-body communication. Over time, this auditory intervention supports clients in moving toward symptom relief as well as measurable progress in daily activity, resilience, and long-term nervous system health.

Conclusion

The Safe and Sound Protocol is a gentle, science-informed way to support nervous system regulation. By helping the brain and body shift out of chronic stress patterns and into a state of safety-healing growth become more accessible.

We are excited to offer the Safe and Sound Protocol as part of our Functional Brain Health Program because it reflects our commitment to addressing brain health at the root- not just managing symptoms. By integrating innovative, research-based tools like SSP into our comprehensive approach, we are able to better support our clients in restoring nervous system function and building sustainable, long-term well-being.
