Ea story then to now

BRIDGING THE GAP IN CARE

In 2011, Dr. Melanie Brennan, PT, DPT, saw a gap that traditional healthcare couldn’t fill. While working as a PT at Mayo Clinic for more than a decade, she’d watched countless people recovering from life-changing diagnoses reach the end of what insurance would cover... but not the end of what they needed.

Too many were still struggling, still healing, and still in need of support. So she built something better: a place where recovery doesn’t stop when insurance does, and neuroscience meets compassion to help people keep moving forward.

GROWING A NEW CARE MODEL

ExercisAbilities began as a small outpatient PT clinic with a mission to bridge the gap between acute rehab and lifelong wellness.

In 2015, EA became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, unlocking new ways to serve people who would otherwise go without care. And in 2022, the name evolved to EA Therapeutic Health, reflecting a more holistic, integrated model that brings physical therapy, therapeutic fitness, health coaching, and community-based wellness together under one roof.

WHERE WE ARE TODAY

Today, EA is Southeast Minnesota’s only neuro-focused outpatient PT and therapeutic training provider. Whether you’re learning to walk after a stroke, managing MS, recovering from surgery, or simply trying to stay strong, we’re here to walk alongside you.

We provide accessible, person-centered care that helps people take control of their health, their freedom, and their future. We’re proud to serve the Rochester, MN community, and even prouder of the lives we help transform every day.

Our Approach to Better Recovery

nervous_system_top_preserved_744x810 (1)

Neuroscience-Based Methodology

Traditional PT treats the hardware: your muscles and joints. We focus on the software too, by helping heal and retrain the nervous system. When the brain and body reconnect, recovery happens faster and results go deeper.

Care That Meets You Where You Are

No matter where you are in your recovery, just starting rehab, rebuilding strength, or maintaining progress, we’re here to guide you forward with personalized care and support.
Untitled design (39)

Personalized Care Plans

No one-size-fits-all care here. Your PT takes time to listen, understand your goals, and assess your movement to create a personalized plan that’s built around you.
Untitled design (38)

Innovative Recovery Tools

We use advanced tools to accelerate recovery. Neubie uses electricity to reactivate neural pathways, and FSM reduces pain and inflammation. Adaptive fitness equipment and specialized lifts support your progress at every stage.

Collaborative Team Approach

Recovery works better when everyone works together. Our PTs, fitness trainers, coaches, and techs communicate closely to ensure you get coordinated, expert support that evolves with your needs.

Board Chair

Mark Ellingson

I was born and raised in Rochester, MN, along with my two brothers and one sister.  Upon high school graduation, I attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN, and truly believed I would never return to live in Rochester, as I thought it was too small.  Never say never because after graduating college and living in other mid-west cities over the next ten years, family and business brought me back to this great community.  My wife is Registered Nurse at Mayo Clinic.  We have four children and greatly appreciate being able to raise them in a safe, growing and vibrant community.

I joined the Board of Directors in 2021.  However, I’ve known of ExercisAbilities for many years through my brother. He received physical therapy treatment from them for a long time for his many special needs. As a family member, they truly made a difference for him by caring for and addressing his specific situation. Now as a Board member, I am able to see that they do the same for all of their clientele and follow their mission every day, ‘make healthy, happy and independent possible for everyone’. I look forward to being a productive member of the ExercisAbilities community and contributing to their mission and continual growth.

Karla-Bollesen-300x300

Karla Bollesen

Board Secretary

Karla Bollesen

Professionally, for the past 38 years, I have worked in the field of special education. After graduating from John Marshall High School in 1979, I attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout and pursued the field of education. I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education in 1983 and began my teaching career in Plainview, MN. At the time of my graduation teaching jobs were difficult to find, so when a position in special education opened up in Plainview, I applied and was hired. Although I did not hold the proper certification, the position proved to be a perfect fit for me. That next summer I attended Mankato State University and obtained licensure in the area of Early Childhood Special Education. I taught in Plainview for three years and then accepted a similar position for the Rochester Public Schools. During this time, I enrolled at the University of Minnesota and obtained my Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and licensure as a Special Education Director and Elementary School Principal.

During my tenure in Rochester Public Schools, I held numerous positions both as an educator and administrator. In the field of special education administration, my roles allowed me to experience all age groups and the continuum of services for students with special needs. In addition to special education, I was afforded the opportunity to work as the Early Childhood Family Education Program Manager in Community Education, Coordinator of the Graduate Induction Program, Director of Title Programs, and Supervisor of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. For the past 11 years, I served on the Superintendent’s Cabinet in the position of Executive Director of Student Services. In this role, I was responsible for supervision of all areas of special education, related services, health services, Students In Transition (homeless), Title Programs, mental health, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). As the Executive Director, I gained extensive knowledge in the areas of finance and budgeting, human resources, grant writing, School Board Policy, and educational law.

I recently retired from Rochester Public Schools and am excited to have the time to serve the community in other ways. The opportunity to be a member of the EA Board is of great interest to me, and I hope to join all of you in continuing this very important work.

Board Member

Craig Wendland

I am a Rochester native, but I have also lived elsewhere during my education and early professional career. I am a retired attorney, John Marshal High School graduate, then attended the University of Minnesota (B.A. 1972) and UCLA School of Law (J.D. 1976). I first practiced Law in Santa Barbara, California. In 1976 my wife and I returned to Rochester where I practiced law until my retirement. Hunting, fishing, motorcycling (15 countries!) boating and water sports are among the activities I and my family enjoy. Our “up north” cabin has for 20+ years provided countless days of fun and relaxation.

During my legal career, I primarily practiced in the areas of business law, real estate law, and estate planning. Additionally, I have formed a number of nonprofit corporations and have served on numerous nonprofit Boards of Directors. Our law firm, Wendland Utz, Ltd., has a strong tradition of “giving back” to our community by providing pro bono legal services to charitable organizations whenever possible.

I am currently in my 4th year as a director of EA Therapeutic and have enjoyed working with our incredible staff and very capable Directors. During my tenure I have been impressed with our dramatic growth in services and contributions which make our mission possible. Our Executive Director, Melanie Brennan, is very professional and, together with our Board,  extremely capable of guiding EA into the future. This is a well-run organization! I have personally utilized therapeutic services offered by EA and highly recommend them.

Brian Oxley, CPA/ABV/CFF

I am currently employed by Smith Schafer as a Senior Manager. My practice entails Business Valuations, Fraud & Forensics, and Fractional CFO consulting.

I was born and raised in Independence, IA (NE Corner) and I graduated from Iowa State University in 1990. I spent the first 15 years of my professional career in central Iowa in Ames and Des Moines as a practicing CPA. In 2005, my career brought me to Rochester with my wife and children and we settled in Byron. My daughter is now a social worker for Olmsted County and my son is a student at RCTC. My wife is a teacher at Gibbs Elementary School.

In my non-working hours, I enjoy bike riding, walking, photography and music and especially spending time with my family.

A large part of my life from the age of 18 until the present has been involved in non-for-profit and charitable causes. I became a Mason at the age of 18 which is devoted to children’s charities and am still involved today. Related to Masons are the Shriners of which I have been a member for the past 5 years. Their charitable work is related to children’s hospitals.

When I was 18, I became involved in a summer camp for child with diabetes. I held several roles from camp counselor to Board Advisory member. Throughout the years I have continued to be involved with United Way, Boys & Girls Club, local Church Boards and other various local non-profit Boards.

I have been blessed in life and I find the most reward when I am able to contribute back to organizations of worthy cause.

About Ea FAQ

Who does EA Therapeutic Health serve?

EA provides physical therapy, neuro rehab, and wellness services for people of all ages and abilities. From stroke survivors and those managing chronic conditions like MS or Parkinson’s, to older adults preventing falls and kids building strength. We meet clients where they are and help them move forward with confidence.

What kinds of conditions do you specialize in?

EA specializes in neurological, imbalance, mobility, and chronic pain conditions, in people of all ages. Common diagnoses include stroke, MS, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injuries, dizziness disorders, and post-surgical recovery. We also support people with recent injury, generalized weakness, fall risk, or those needing strength training to live independently.

What types of services and programs do you offer?

We offer a full continuum of care including physical therapy, therapeutic personal training, wellness classes, adaptive fitness classes, neuro recovery intensives, health coaching, and community-based programming. These services help clients maintain progress and stay strong for life, long after insurance runs out.

How is EA different from other clinics or PT providers?

We’re not a traditional clinic. We combine compassionate hands-on care with advanced technology and a neuroscience-based methodology to support long-term recovery. As a non-profit, we’re proud to offer care to everyone, regardless of income or insurance coverage. Our team works collaboratively across therapy, training, and wellness to provide integrated, life-changing support.

I’m a medical provider; how do I refer a patient to EA?
Referring to EA is easy. We accept referrals from physicians, nurse practitioners, case managers, and specialists. Just send a fax or secure message with the patient’s info and our team will handle the rest, including contacting the patient to schedule their first appointment. If you’d like to discuss your patients care with our team first, please send us a message here to connect with one of our providers.
What does “neuroscience-based care” mean?
It means we treat the root cause, not just the symptoms. Our care model focuses on how the brain and nervous system influence movement, balance, and recovery. Rather than focusing only on muscles and joints, we treat your body holistically. We use evidence-backed techniques to rewire brain-body communication and promote real, lasting change.
I’m interested in volunteering, how can I help?
Thank you for your interest! We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds! Whether you’re a student exploring healthcare, a retired professional, or just someone who wants to make a difference, you can support our mission through client support, administrative help, fundraising events, or sharing your unique skills. Visit our donate page to learn more.
How can I donate or support your mission financially?
Your generosity helps us provide accessible care to those who might otherwise go without. Donations fund therapy sessions, adaptive equipment, and community outreach. You can make a one-time gift, become a monthly donor, or support our annual fundraisers. Visit our Donate page for details.
What’s it like to work at EA?
Our culture is collaborative, mission-driven, and rooted in compassion. If you’re passionate about helping others and want to work in an innovative, inclusive, team-focused environment, we’d love to meet you. Explore open positions on our Careers page.
How do you keep care accessible for people who can’t afford it?
As a nonprofit, we offer income-based payment options, accept HSA/FSA, and work with insurance when possible. Our donor-supported Access Fund also helps cover care for individuals without sufficient insurance. Nobody should be denied the chance to experience real healing.
